How do I know if my artwork is suitable for embroidery?

So you have a piece of artwork that you want to have digitized for embroidery. You have the perfect project for it and you know it will be great. But wait! How do you know if your artwork will work?

You’ll need a printer/copier that can resize your artwork copy. If your artwork is in color a color copy will be best.

Decide what size you want your embroidery design to be. Do you want to use your 4” hoop or your 14” hoop? Use your printer/copier to enlarge or reduce the size of your artwork to the size you want. And print a copy.

Use a ruler to make sure it is the size you want and cut it out in the shape of the hoop you will be using.

Now is where we will find out if your artwork is suitable. Hold your artwork copy out away from at arm’s length. Arm’s length is approximately 3 feet from your nose to the end of your hand. At this distance what you see is approximately what you will see in your embroidery design.

The smaller the designs the less detail is visible. The larger the designs the more detail. Keep this in mind when you look at the artwork for your digitizing/embroidery projects.
